If you're nearing the end of your apprenticeship, you may have heard the term "Gateway". But what does it actually mean?

Gateway is a key milestone in the apprenticeship journey. It is the point at which an apprentice, employer, and training provider agree that the apprentice is ready to move on to their End-Point Assessment (EPA).

What Is Gateway?

Gateway is the formal review that takes place before an apprentice can begin their End-Point Assessment.

At this stage, the employer and training provider confirm that the apprentice has completed all required training and developed the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for their role.

Gateway helps ensure that apprentices are fully prepared before undertaking their final assessments.

What Needs to Be Completed Before Gateway?

While requirements can vary between apprenticeship standards, apprentices will typically need to:

Complete their apprenticeship training.
Meet any qualification requirements outlined in their standard.
Demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and behaviours.
Receive employer approval confirming they are ready for EPA.

Once these requirements have been met, the apprentice can officially pass through Gateway and progress to the next stage.

What Happens After Gateway?

After Gateway, the apprentice will begin their End-Point Assessment.

The assessment methods will depend on the apprenticeship standard and may include:

Professional discussions
Interviews
Knowledge tests
Practical observations
Presentations or projects

These assessments are carried out by an independent End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) to ensure a fair and consistent assessment process.
