Resits & Retakes: How to Come Back Better Prepared

Not getting the assessment result you hoped for can be disappointing, but it doesn’t mean your journey ends there.
A resit or retake gives you another opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and behaviours. The important thing is to learn from your first attempt and use that experience to prepare for the next one.
Resit or Retake: What’s the Difference?
Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, they can mean different things:
Resit – Another attempt at an assessment, usually without the need for significant additional learning beforehand.
Retake – Another attempt that generally follows further learning or preparation.
The exact process will depend on your apprenticeship standard and assessment plan.
How to Prepare for Your Next Attempt
1. Use your feedback
Look carefully at the feedback from your assessment. Focus your revision on the areas where you need to strengthen your knowledge or demonstrate more evidence.
2. Change your revision approach
If your previous revision method didn’t work for you, try something different. Flashcards, practice questions, mind maps and explaining topics aloud can all help make revision more active.
3. Practise your answers
If your assessment includes questioning or a professional discussion, practise talking through your experience and using real workplace examples. The more comfortable you are explaining what you know, the more confident you'll feel.
4. Break it down
Don’t try to revise everything at once. Focus on one area at a time and set yourself small, manageable goals.
5. Look after yourself
Give yourself breaks, get enough rest and avoid leaving everything until the last minute. Going into your assessment feeling calm and prepared can make a real difference.
Having to resit or retake an assessment can feel like a setback, but it’s also another opportunity.
You already have something you didn’t have before: experience of the assessment itself.
Take on board your feedback, focus your preparation and approach your next attempt with confidence. You’ve already come a long way, and one result doesn’t take away from everything you’ve achieved along the way.
