What are Apprenticeship Assessments?

Each apprenticeship standard sets out specific knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) that the apprentice must develop. To be eligible for assessment, the apprentice must also achieve key on-programme milestones, meet the required level of English and maths, and, in some cases, complete a specific qualification — all of which must be achieved before progressing to the gateway to completion.

Throughout their apprenticeship, apprentices undertake a structured programme of on-the-job and off-the-job training, designed to develop the KSBs outlined in the relevant standard and required for competence in their job role. This includes a requirement to spend a minimum of 20% of their time on off-the-job training.

At the end of their on-programme learning, the apprentice is assessed by an independent assessment organisation approved to deliver the apprenticeship assessment for the relevant standard. This final assessment replaces the previous model of continuous assessment, providing a clear and objective evaluation of whether the apprentice has met the requirements set out in the standard.

The assessment organisation — and the independent apprenticeship assessor — must be listed on the Register of Assessment Organisations and must be independent of the apprentice’s employer, training provider, and any party involved in their training.
