Mortuary Technician
Level 3
A Mortuary Technician Assessment Organisation is an approved company responsible for providing apprenticeship assessments in the mortuary care and death care sector. As an assessment organisation, we ensure that apprentices meet the standards and competencies outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standard.
What the Role Entails
Mortuary Technicians work in the death care industry, typically within funeral organisations, NHS and private hospitals, universities, schools of anatomy, and private or public mortuaries. The role focuses on ensuring the effective operation of the mortuary and providing dignified care of the deceased.
The occupation has two primary options:
Funeral mortuary technician: prepares, dresses and uncoffins the deceased, ensuring care and presentation in line with religious and cultural requirements.
Anatomical pathology technologist: assists with post-mortem procedures, including evisceration, dissection, tissue retrieval and reconstruction following post-mortem examination.
Mortuary Technicians interact with internal and external stakeholders, such as funeral directors, embalmers, coroners, regulatory agencies, bereavement services, and clinicians. They are responsible for ensuring appropriate care standards, maintaining mortuary governance, monitoring equipment and consumables, and ensuring work areas and equipment remain sanitary and functional.
Components of the Mortuary Technician Assessment
Order of Assessment Methods
The EPA consists of 2 discrete assessment methods.
Performance in the EPA will determine the overall apprenticeship standard grade of:
• fail
• pass
• distinction
Professional Discussion underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence
This is a structured discussion where the independent assessor asks the apprentice open questions to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours in the standard, using real workplace evidence.
The professional discussion is conducted with reference to the apprentice’s portfolio.
The apprentice will be required to illustrate their answers with mapped evidence.
The professional discussion must last for 60 minutes and the assessor will ask a minimum of 8 open questions.
Observation with Questioning
This method involves the independent assessor observing the apprentice carrying out their job role in the workplace under normal working conditions. The assessor will ask questions during or after the observation to confirm understanding and application of key knowledge, skills and behaviours.
Observation is undertaken in the apprentice’s normal work environment.
The assessor will ask open questions to draw out competence and application.
The observation with questions must take 2 hours. The time for questioning is included in the overall assessment time.
