Learning and Skills Teacher
Level 5
A Learning and Skills Teacher Assessment Organisation is an approved company responsible for providing apprenticeship assessments in the Education and Training sector. As an assessment organisation, we ensure that apprentices meet the standards and competencies outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standards.
What the Role Entails
This occupation exists across the Further Education and Skills (FES) Sector, primarily teaching students aged 16 and over, though some may teach 14–16 year olds in alternative provision or in FE colleges with ESFA approval. Teachers work in FE and sixth form colleges (general or specialist), independent training providers (ITPs), Adult Community Learning (ACL) services, and offender learning settings. They deliver a wide range of academic, vocational, and technical education—generally up to Level 3, but sometimes up to postgraduate level—across diverse subject areas. Many are dual professionals, combining technical, vocational, and academic expertise to provide high-quality learning experiences.
Components of the Learning and Skills Teacher Assessment
Order of Assessment Methods
The assessment methods can be delivered in any order. The result of one assessment method does not need to be known before starting the next.
Performance in the Assessments determines the overall grade of:
• Fail
• Pass
• Distinction
Professional discussion
This assessment method has 1 component.
The discussion will draw questions and amplifications from the portfolio and the knowledge, skills, and behaviours mapped to this assessment method.
The professional discussion must last for 90 minutes.
Lesson observation and professional dialogue
This assessment method has 2 components.
The lesson observation of the apprentice must last 1 hour. The 1 hour allocated to the lesson observation may include set up of the learning environment and time post lesson to include student and staff interaction, in addition to observation of the lesson.
Following the lesson, the independent assessor and apprentice will conduct a professional dialogue about the observed lesson. This dialogue must last for 45 minutes and provide the apprentice with an opportunity to reflect on the lesson, as well as the opportunity to demonstrate those KSBs that the apprentice did not have the opportunity to demonstrate during the lesson observation.
The independent assessor must ask a minimum of 6 open questions. They may ask followup questions where clarification is required.
