Learning & Skills Mentor

Level 4

A Learning & Skills Mentor Assessment Organisation is an approved company responsible for providing apprenticeship assessments in the Education and Training sector. As an assessment organisation, we ensure that apprentices meet the standards and competencies outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standards.

What the Role Entails

The purpose of the learning and skills mentor occupation is to support individuals and groups with their learning and development towards agreed goals. They do this by working within ethical and legal frameworks to ensure a high standard of mentoring practice. They work collaboratively with stakeholders to inclusively meet the individual needs of the mentee. They are committed to their own professional development and reflective practice as a mentor and within their sector. They typically work in an environment in their organisation where they are the knowledgeable other. They work in a variety of locations and environments where mentoring activity may be undertaken face to face or remotely.

Components of the Learning & Skills Mentor Assessment

Order of assessment methods

The assessment methods can be delivered in any order. The result of one assessment method does not need to be known before starting the next.

Performance in the Assessments determines the overall grade of:
• Fail
• Pass
• Merit
• Distinction

Professional Discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence

In the professional discussion, an independent assessor and apprentice have a formal two-way conversation. It gives the apprentice the opportunity to demonstrate the KSBs mapped to this assessment method.

The apprentice can refer to and illustrate their answers with evidence from their portfolio of evidence.

The professional discussion must last for 60 minutes and consist of at least 8 questions.

Observation with Questioning

In the observation with questions, an independent assessor observes the apprentice in their workplace and asks questions. The apprentice completes their day-to-day duties under normal working conditions. Simulation is not allowed. It gives the apprentice the opportunity to demonstrate the KSBs mapped to this assessment method.

The observation with questions must take 2 hours
