A Healthcare Science Assistant Assessment Organisation is an approved company responsible for providing apprenticeship assessments in the Health and Social Care sector. As an assessment organisation, we ensure that apprentices meet the standards and competencies outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standards.
What the Role Entails
Healthcare Science Assistants work in hospitals, GP practices, and other healthcare settings, including the NHS and private providers. They support areas such as Life Sciences, Physiological Sciences, Clinical Engineering, and Bioinformatics, often in labs, outpatient departments, or workshops.
Their role involves performing routine scientific and technical procedures, preparing equipment and environments, and managing stock. They work closely with healthcare science professionals, patients, and the wider care team, usually reporting to a Healthcare Science Associate or professional.
Components of the Healthcare Science Assistant Assessment
Order of Assessment Methods
The assessment methods can be delivered in any order. The result of one assessment method does not need to be known before starting the next.
Performance in the Assessments determines the overall grade of:
• Fail
• Pass
• Distinction
Professional discussion with a portfolio of evidence
This is a two-way discussion between the IA and the apprentice which will draw questions and amplifications from the knowledge, skills and behaviours mapped to the portfolio.
The professional discussion must last for 60 minutes and consist of at least 7 questions.
Observation of practice with questions
The observation must take place in the apprentice’s normal place of work carrying out day to day duties. After the observation, there will be a questioning session for clarifications.
The observation must take 1.5 hours. The time for questioning is included in the overall assessment time. The independent assessor must ask at least 4 questions.
