Level 4
An Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Apprenticeship Assessment Organisation is an approved company that is responsible for providing assessments for apprenticeships in the Early Intervention field. As an Assessment Organisation in this sector, we will ensure that apprentices meet the required standards and competencies outlined in the relevant apprenticeship standards.
What the Role Entails
The role of a Children, Young People and Families Practitioner is all about making a meaningful, lasting difference in the lives of those you support. In this role, you’ll be working closely with children, young people and their families to understand their individual needs, recognising that every situation is unique. You’ll take a compassionate and curious approach, building trust while also challenging and supporting individuals to stay safe and reach their full potential. Along the way, you’ll assess needs, agree on the right support or interventions, and work collaboratively with other professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes.
As a practitioner, your day-to-day work can vary depending on your setting. You might be supporting children in residential care, helping to shape and deliver their placement plans while supporting their health, education and overall development. Or you could be working within the community, focusing on early intervention and safeguarding across settings like family homes, schools or youth centres. In either case, you’ll play a key role in helping children, young people and families build confidence, overcome challenges and develop the skills they need to thrive independently, all while reflecting on and continuously improving your own practice.
Components of the Children, Young People and Families Practitioner Assessment
Competence interview with independent assessor
The Apprentice will submit the portfolio at least three weeks before the competence interview is due to be held. The portfolio will be reviewed by the assessor and will be the subject of the competence interview.
The competence interview is a structured discussion of 55- 60 minutes duration between the apprentice and the independent assessor, focusing on the work covered in the portfolio.
Observation of practice
The observation will consist of a live setting practical example, undertaken at the apprentice’s normal place of work. The practical example chosen must show that the needs of a specific child or young person are at the heart of this work. This will utilise the apprentice’s skills and link their theoretical knowledge to practical working.
The observation will last 80-90 minutes individual observation of the apprentice at work. This includes:
• Initial Briefing: 10 minutes for the apprentice to outline the context of the work.
• Observation: 55–60 minutes of observed practice.
• Clarification: 15–20 minute Q&A for the assessor to review choices, outcomes, and reflections.
Order of Assessment Methods
The assessment methods can be delivered in any order. The result of one assessment method does not need to be known before starting the next.
Performance in the Assessments determines the overall grade of:
• Fail
• Pass
• Distinction
